Each year your donations help us to fund national research into cancer treatment and cures.

How your donations contributes to national research

We have an ongoing commitment to minimising the impact on cancer in our community and funding cancer research is an important part of this commitment.  Each year we contribute towards a $3 million national research fund that awards grants to selected cancer research projects.  Researchers throughout the country are currently investigating the causes and treatment of various forms of cancer and are looking at ways of early detection and prevention as well.

New Zealand Cancer Control Trust

The New Zealand Cancer Control trust was established in February 2001 with initial funding from the Cancer Society of New Zealand and the Child Cancer Foundation.  The Waikato/Bay of Plenty Cancer Society was one of four divisions to contribute funding with the intent to provide continued support for people affected by cancer.

The Trust aims:

  • To reduce the burden of cancer on the people of New Zealand
  • To oversee the development of a national cancer control strategy (NCSS) for New Zealand
  • To develop a concept for a national cancer control agency
  • To consult with, inform and educate consumer, professional and relevant Government and non-Government agencies about the need for a national cancer control strategy
  • To monitor the implementation of a national cancer control strategy.

Initial activity

In February 2001 the Ministry of Health contracted the Trust to produce two publications:

  • Towards a National Cancer Control Strategy of New Zealand
This background paper describes the burden of cancer in New Zealand; identifies sources of data and deficiencies in existing data in New Zealand; reviews cancer control strategies developed overseas; and summarises the work already done in New Zealand that could form the basis of a NCCS.
  • The Development of a National Cancer Control Strategy for New Zealand
This development plan describes how the Ministry of Health and the Trust can work together to develop a draft NCCS ready for consultation by 30 June 2002.
