Relay for Life

Relay for life is a celebration of remembrance, hope and thanks.  It is a unique, challenging and fun way to raise money to provide much needed free services for people and families affected by cancer in the Waikato/Bay of Plenty region.

Relay for Life 2008

Nearly 3000 people from the Waikato/Bay of Plenty region took part in three hugely successful Relay For Life events hosted by the Cancer Society. Tauranga Racecourse, Rotorua International Stadium and Claudelands Events Centre Hamilton were the venues for this year's events.

Just over 200 teams raised $432,558 across both events for local people affected by cancer.

However, the overnight relays are more than just fundraisers. The relay is also about celebrating the lives of cancer survivors, supporting those facing cancer and honouring those we have lost. The survivors’ lap opens the relay. This is an opportunity for cancer survivors, their caregivers and friends to be recognised for their courage, strength and victory over cancer. The candlelight ceremony held at dusk sees hundreds of personalised candle tributes lit in honour and support of someone fighting cancer or in memory of loved ones. The candle tributes remind and inspire walkers that the fight against cancer is about people in their community.
