What you need to know about staying at the Lions Cancer Lodge

How do I make a reservation?
When your treatment is being planned, you will be offered the opportunity to stay at the Lions Cancer Lodge.  The following conditions apply:

  • You must be able to care for yourself.
  • You must live more than 80 kilometres from Hamilton. 
  • If you choose to stay, further information on the Lodge will be sent to you prior to your treatment.

How much is it going to cost me?
There is no charge for accommodation or meals at the Lions Cancer Lodge while you are undergoing radiation treatment at the Regional Cancer Centre.

How will I get to my treatment?
There is a vehicle to transport people to and from their treatment.  The Oncology department is less than 100m from the Lodge for those who enjoy walking.

What do the rooms in the Lodge contain?
Bedrooms contain a set of drawers, a handbasin, a wardrobe, a bed and a radio with headphones.

Is there a laundry?
No.

Is there a stoma room?
Yes.

What about meals?
Free nutritious meals are provided in the shared dining room.  Tea and coffee making facilities are available at all times.  Lunch is not provided on Mondays and Fridays.  Cafeterias are available on the Hospital campus.

What is there to do at the Lodge?
A variety of leisure activities are available including:

  • Emailing friends and family
  • Reading in the library
  • Watching television
  • Playing card games or pool or using the computer
  • Taking a relaxing spa bath
  • Playing the piano
  • Helping to prepare meals
  • Working in the vegetable garden
  • Visiting Hamilton city for shopping, to see a movie or relax in a café or restaurant

What should I bring with me?
You will need to pack:

  • Toiletries
  • Clothing for one week
  • Personal items
  • Single sheets
  • Pillowcases
  • Bathmats, towels and facecloth
  • Anything else you need to make your stay more comfortable

Can I stay the weekend?
No.  The Lions Cancer Lodge facilities are open from 8am Monday to 12 noon Friday.

Where do I get my prescriptions filled?
A prescription service is available. Please indicate if you have a High User or Community Services card.

Where can my support person stay?
Hilda Ross House provides accommodation.  It is located 300m from the Lions Cancer Lodge and caters for individuals and families.
